GH's ORIGINAL NIKOLAS IS BACK

Tyler Christopher ABC confirms that Tyler Christopher is returning as GENERAL HOSPITAL's Nikolas, a role he vacated in 1999.  As a result, his successor, Coltin Scott, has been let go, after three-and-half years with the show.

"The original actor became available and it was an opportunity we didn't want to pass up," explains Executive Producer Jill Farren Phelps.  "Coltin has done a great job and we wish him all the best."

Christopher (then known as Tyler Baker) stepped into the well-heeled shoes of charming prince Nikolas in 1996, when the Cassadine clan re-emerged on the canvas after the revelation that Nik was Laura's long-hidden son.  Both the chracter and the actor quickly gained popularity, and in 1997, Christopher won a Soap Opera Digest Award for Outstanding male newcomer.  But Christopher opted out when his contract expired two years later, saying, "I'm just going to put myself out there and see what happens."  The actor went on to land roles in independent films, as well as numerous prime-time appearances on such shows as C.S.I., BOOMTOWN, JAG and FELICITY, and a regular spot on THE PRETENDER. But he also maintained his soap ties, playing DAYS OF OUR LIVES's Signore Christofero for a few days in February, 2001 and marrying YOUNG AND RESTLESS's Eva Longoria (Isabella) in January, 2002.

Though in a 2000 interview he nixed the idea of a return to daytime ("I think I can go ahead and close the book on it, regardless of what happens"), the actor has obviously had a change of heart and could begin airing as early as later this month.
